Natcon 2008 Focuses On Affordable Housing

Natcon 2008, CREDAI’s 7th national real estate convention was held in New Delhi between January 7 and 9 and was attended by Kamal Nath, Minister of Commerce and Industry, and Kumari Selja, Minister of State for Housing and Poverty Alleviation. Both the ministers emphasized the need for affordable housing while addressing the event, which saw the participation of more than 800 delegates from government, real estate and housing finance institutions.

The three-day convention was a platform for discussions and deliberations on topics like: Policies and regulatory environment; Real estate indices and developer rating; Reforms in real estate; Affordable housing: Making it a reality on PPP; Future of real estate; Shifting ownership patterns and influence of FDI; New dynamics in retail/hospitality/entertainment; and Expected role of government and private sector in real estate.

Nath, while addressing the participants, said, “The real estate sector represents one of the most important facets of India’s growth story... It is not just about constructing malls but affordable housing as well.”

Selja reiterated the problem of shortage in affordable housing. “The urban housing backlog with increased urbanisation assumes alarming proportions, especially for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Low-Income Groups (LIG),” she said.

Kumar Gera, Chairman, CREDAI, agreed. “Though the real estate sector is booming, it is not benefiting all. There is an urgent need to find ways to reduce costs in order to decrease the price of the end-product,” he suggested.
